PDX Art: Paul Francis Fukui at Cock Gallery, Everett Station Lofts
Paul Francis Fukui shows the latest of the series of large-scale Jewel paintings. The Jewels are a metaphor for the burden life places on those who choose to live differently. His masterful use of color combined with the scale and intensity engulfs the viewer and imparts the crushing weight that is our conscience.
Paul Francis Fukui is an artist and activist in the LGBTQ movement. He has shown nationally and has a Masters of Fine Art from Tufts University / School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston MA. He currently resides in Portland OR.
Show runs May 3, 2012 through May 31, 2012.
Cock Gallery is new gallery located at the Everett Lofts in Oldtown Portland. Our mission is to showcase professional, provocative and intelligent work that might not otherwise be shown due to content or commercial value.

Paul's work is like a revelation to the senses like tunnels into another world. If one could only get to the other side which of course is impossible or is it?
"The Jewels" are a stand in for our compressed experience which either refines us or destroys us.

experts form a previous interview
When are you generally satisfied with a piece in regard to the theme?
My stuff tends to have a long gestation process, so anything that
takes physical form grows out of a seed planted awhile back. The
piece naturally grows out of the idea and will thus express that
idea in some fundamental way. Now, whether it expresses that idea
successfully, that is another matter.
Your artistic palette seems condensed. What is your favorite
and what is the symbolic meaning or your
reasoning behind it?
I am enough of a product of the postmodern moment to feel not too
much allegiance to any particular mode of visual expression.
Everything is fair game. If I work in a particular way it is because
I gravitate in that direction. It happens at the level of instinct,
and I do credit influences from a variety of times and places.
